Clifford Springs: a company with a long pedigree
The long time, family business was founded in 1946 by Theodore Clifford under the name “The Baycliff Spring Company”. The name Clifford Springs was adopted in 1957, and the business has continued to flourish ever since.
In those early days, the business was a general spring maker, transitioning the skills of those who had been working in the historic needle and fishhook industries in the Redditch area.
Over the years, the focus of the business changed, specialising in energising springs and serving the seal making industries.
Today the business niche is less narrow. Still a specialist spring maker, Clifford Springs is known for its innovative approach. Our technical team works closely with clients to be able to manufacture springs that meet the specific needs of individual applications.
Many of those applications are in industries such as energy, chemical processing or agriculture, where the spring is energising a seal or providing force to a valve, and where leaks could have catastrophic consequences.
Members of various bodies and work groups, we are taking an active role in understanding the potential outcomes of components in hydrogen environments. Hydrogen embrittlement is a real issue for some applications. Our understanding of different material properties and our extensive manufacturing expertise means that you can trust us to help you find the right spring solution for your specific requirement.
Having created the first PEEK spring over 20 years ago, when many in the industry were saying that it couldn’t be done, we are keen to stay at the forefront of innovation in the spring industry. Researching and testing springs for different applications is something that we continually involve ourselves in. If we can create something more effective and more efficient for you, then we will.
After having been under family ownership for so many years, Clifford Springs has recently been bought by Lesjöfors, who recognised the technical competence within the business, and the fabulous trust and client relationships that have been built up as a result.
John Clifford, who has been our Managing Director of the business for 28 years, will continue to run the business as we keep focussing on innovation and excellence as we grow.
If you are looking for a spring maker with an innovative approach, we would love to talk with you and help you create the right spring for your needs.
