WIKA Lake District 10 Peaks Challenge

This June, a team from WIKA Instruments Ltd successfully completed the Lake District 10 Peaks, raising money for Coeliac UK.

The team were on a mission to raise these funds, as last year, one of their children was diagnosed with Coeliac disease, and it became apparent how difficult it is for Coeliacs to find food safe to eat when not eating at home, and how misunderstood the effects of gluten are by most people.

Keith Woolnough says, ‘When my daughter was diagnosed with Coeliac disease last October, we found the information and support from Coeliac UK really helpful in helping us cope with this major change to our lifestyle. Coeliac disease is an auto-immune disease where the ingestion of even tiny amounts of gluten can cause a whole range of effects, such as damage to the intestines and gastrointestinal issues, but also a range of other symptoms. The disease is often misunderstood, particularly the implications of cross-contamination and the challenges in eating out.

‘It was only natural that I wanted to do something to help the work that Coeliac UK do, so I persuaded a group of friends and WIKA colleagues to join me in doing a trek to raise money. We settled on taking on a challenge to climb 10 peaks in the Lake District, starting at Great Langdale and trekking our way to Scafell Pike, before making our way back over Bowfell. The route took us over 30 km of challenging terrain, climbing over 7000ft which involved vertical climbing at times. After the joy of finally ascending the final peak, Bowfell, we still had 6½ km to hike back to our start point. The hike took us just over 12 hours to complete and was definitely much tougher than any of us envisaged.’

Challenge Completed!

To date, the team has raised £1,584 and would like to thank everyone who sponsored them.
