Beyond the Compatibility Chart: Why Custom Spring Selection Matters
When it comes to selecting the right energising spring for valve applications, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Stress, temperature, and chemical environments all play a crucial role in determining how well a spring will perform over time.
At Clifford Springs, we’ve recently been asked whether we provide a spring material compatibility chart - quick reference charts to match spring materials to environmental conditions.
FYI – we don’t.
And there a number of good reasons why we don’t.
While the idea of these compatibility charts is a great one, what they fail to account for is the complexity of real-world applications. Selecting the right spring isn’t just about matching a material to an environment. It’s about understanding the full picture.
Why There’s No Simple Answer
A spring’s performance is influenced by three key factors:
- Stress and Load Conditions
- Temperature Extremes
- Chemical Exposure
Let’s consider each of those in turn.
1. Stress and Load Conditions
Springs are subjected to constant mechanical forces. Over time, these can lead to fatigue, relaxation, or even failure. The same material might perform differently depending on whether it’s in a static or dynamic application, the load it’s under and the spring design itself.
2. Temperature Extremes
Some environments expose springs to high or fluctuating temperatures, which can weaken materials, alter elasticity, or accelerate wear. Even materials known for their heat resistance (like Inconel® or Hastelloy®) behave differently at extreme temperatures, depending on the specific conditions they face.
3. Chemical Exposure
Aggressive chemicals can corrode, embrittle, or degrade springs over time. But chemical compatibility isn’t a simple yes/no answer—factors like concentration, exposure time, and the presence of multiple chemicals can all impact performance. What works well in one environment may fail in another.
The Right Spring Starts with the Right Conversation
Rather than relying on a chart with oversimplified recommendations, Clifford Springs believes in tailoring solutions to each customer’s specific needs. By working closely with our clients, we:
- Understand the full application—not just the environment but also how the spring is used.
- Advise on the best material and design based on real-world conditions, not assumptions.
- Ensure long-term reliability by considering all performance factors, from stress cycles to potential contaminants.
Let’s Build the Right Spring for You
A compatibility chart can’t ask the right questions—but we can. At Clifford Springs, we pride ourselves on delivering precision-engineered springs built for real-world conditions. If you need a spring that won’t just work on paper but performs in practice, talk to our team today.
