Hot Spot New ISO TC 67 Working Group on Pipeline Valve and Actuator Standardisation

What is it?

The ISO TC67/SC2 committee covering pipelines is creating WG 27, a new working group concerning pipeline valves and actuators. WG 27 is tasked with updating the following standards:

1. ISO 14313:2007- Pipeline Valves- equivalent to API 6D
2. ISO 14723:2009- Subsea Pipeline Valves- equivalent to API 6DSS
3. ISO 12490:2011- Mechanical integrity and sizing of Actuators and Mounting Kits for Pipeline Valves- equivalent to API 6DSSX

Chris Williamson the chairman of the BVAA Valve Group will join WG 27 representing BSI working alongside any other BVAA members who have also joined. With Chris’ assistance the BVAA will shadow the work of this ISO group and as the work on each standard gets underway we will form a Technical Expert Group (TEG) of interested members to provide input into each revision.

If you have an interest in participating in the TEG then please advise the BVAA secretariat by 27/5/22 and confirm which of the standards you are interested in.

Why is it Important?

Competing standards such as API 6D and ISO 14313 often present contradictory requirements that can significantly increase the number of product designs required, often at significant expense to the manufacturer. The formation of this working group presents an important opportunity to improve the alignment between equivalent API and ISO specifications.

ISO TC67/SC2 is responsible for a wide range of standards, many of which do not relate directly to valves and actuators, although the committee does have formal liaisons with ISO TC153-valves and the IOGP JIP33 project. This new working group represents an important opportunity for BVAA members to influence the development of three important pipeline valve and actuator oil and gas standards via the proposed TEG, without the need to commit to full membership of the ISO Working Group.

Continuous Improvement - Did we miss anything?

Hot Spots are intended to alert members and provide a brief overview of new standards, activities or procedures that are being introduced in the industry. If there is key information missing that would be helpful, please let us know so that we can improve our future service.

Please Note: This Hotspot is for information purposes, and we invite comments from BVAA members only. Please also note that at time of publication ballots may be closed. For more information, please contact the Secretariat.

BVAA Members: Did you know we have a hotspot tab on the BVAA website? Head over to www.bvaa.org.uk/login-here.asp and log into the member only area. You then need to select ‘Hotspots’ for the latest. For information on how to access the member only area of the website please contact jane@bvaa.org.uk
