SAMSON Controls Ltd – part of the SAMSON group - a renowned leader in process automation and control technology, recently had the pleasure of participating in the 5th UK CCUS and Hydrogen Decarbonisation Summit, an event showcasing advancements in hydrogen and carbon capture technologies, hosted by Chameleon Events at the picturesque Royal Armouries in Leeds. The summit was an invaluable learning experience and platform for industry stakeholders to convene and discuss the pressing challenges and opportunities in achieving the UK’s net zero targets.

There were speakers from many diverse industries, including but not limited to, Aviation, Nuclear, Waste to Energy and Transport. It was inspiring to see all the unique and innovative ways in which these industries are utilising various hydrogen production methods, and carbon capture technologies to achieve the ambitious yet achievable decarbonisation initiatives.

One of the highlights of the summit was the involvement of key government bodies and trade organisations such as the Department of Energy, Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA). It was encouraging to see that policies are in place, grants are being provided and support is available in the commercial deployment of carbon capture utilisation and storage, the wheels of change are in motion. The UK has a target to reach net zero by 2050, to achieve this, according to DESNZ, we must be storing 20 – 30 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030, capture 6 million tonnes per year of CO2 of industrial emissions by 2030, up to 1GW of CCUS-enabled hydrogen by 2025 and 10GW of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030. To quote one of the speakers “CCUS is a necessity, not an option to meet our net zero targets”.

Although significant milestones were reached, 2024 is poised to be a transformative year for the industry, with several significant projects nearing Final Investment Decision (FID) approval. These projects represent crucial steps towards accelerating the deployment of carbon capture and hydrogen technologies on a larger scale.

Prab Kumar, Business Development Manager, SAMSON Controls says, “Although process automation operates further down the procurement timeline, the summit, which was expertly and meticulously planned by Callum Flynn and the rest of the team at Chameleon Events, offered us a unique opportunity to stay up to date with the latest technological innovations and emerging trends shaping the future of the hydrogen and carbon capture industry. We look forward to attending the next summit. The key takeaway from the summit is that we must collaborate to succeed.”
