Clifford Springs knows springs!

The business was started way back in 1946 by Theodore Clifford, great grandfather of John and Bob Clifford, the current owners.

Known as The Baycliff Spring Company, this early incarnation of Clifford Springs built on a rich heritage of spring making in Redditch.  The town’s long established industrial focus on needle and fishing hook manufacturing developed a workforce with skills that had easily transferred to spring making.

The business passed on through the family, becoming Clifford Springs in 1957.

Spring like mechanisms have been in use since the bronze age, with the fifteenth century invention of the mainspring, for storing energy in mechanical clocks, making a significant development in spring technology.  It wasn’t until the late 1800s, however, that the first coiled spring was patented, which finally allowed for widespread industrial applications for springs.

150 years later, the innovation in spring design continues, and Redditch continues to be at the epicentre of this innovation.

When John and Bob took over the business in 1992, it was known for general springs work.  Under their ownership it has steadily grown, with John focussing on directing the business, and Bob leading the spring making teams.

The approach at Clifford Springs has always centred around innovation.  There is so much more to springs than people realise and, whilst tiny, they are a key component, ensuring that a piece of equipment works effectively and safely.

Springs are used everywhere, from industrial and mechanical applications to electronics and technology, from dampening vibrations and stabilising the drum in washing machines to powering mechanisms in auto injector syringes.

In the mid-nineties, Clifford Springs identified that they were working with a lot of seal makers who were looking specifically for springs that would energise those seals.  Given that those seals were often used in critical applications such as oil and gas, automotive and construction, the technical requirements for the springs were very precise.

This fitted with the knowledge, expertise and innovative approach of the technical team at Clifford Springs and specialising in seal energising springs became an obvious choice for the business.

Inventing the first PEEK spring in the early 2000s and becoming one of the few global experts producing canted coil, cemented the business’s reputation amongst the best spring makers in the world.  A reputation that the business is proud to maintain today, with its commitment to hard work, customer service and innovation.
