As one of the largest manufacturing sites in Scotland, complex engineering underpins the safe and reliable operations at the INEOS Grangemouth business. Highly skilled and experienced technicians and engineers oversee the processing of petrochemicals used across a range of industrial sectors, transformed into the everyday and specialist items we all take for granted in every day modern life.

In seeking to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the latest innovations and technologies, and to bring best practice to the fore, INEOS approached the BVAA to provide high quality, brand-independent training. They wanted a bespoke course that would be tailored to their specific requirements, with the aim of making it a mandatory course for employees who regularly work with valves on-site.

Peter Dix CEng MIMechE, BVAA Chief Lecturer, worked closely with the INEOS Grangemouth Learning and Development Team and the site’s technical authorities to develop a pilot one-day course, specifically for engineers and maintenance technicians at INEOS Grangemouth entitled ‘Appreciation of Valves’

Appreciation of Valves

Utilising BVAA’s up to date specialist knowledge and experience of valves, the one-day course provided delegates with an appreciation of the role of industrial valves and latest valve technology in modern industrial plants. The course covered the application of different valve types used on the plant, with consideration to the latest understanding in their effective and efficient functional, safety and environmental performance.

Course Objectives

  • Achieve a thorough grasp of the basic principles of valves, their terminology and the common codes and standards used in valve selection and operation across a range of manufacturers.
  • Gain a common understanding of the construction of the various different valve types, their potential applications, design variations and features.
  • Understand how valves are operated, the fundamentals of stem/shaft sealing and which valve is the right choice for a particular application.
  • Collectively consider examples of valve related issues experienced on the plant and identify potential solutions
  • Completion of an end of course assessment to demonstrate understanding of the subject

Pilot Training Successfully Completed

At the end of May, a pilot course was held with a selection of Engineers, Managers, Supervisors and Operations trainers from the Grangemouth site. The aim was to ensure that the course content was sufficient and satisfied INEOS’ training requirements.

Karen Webb, Membership Development Manager at the BVAA says, “We are absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to work with INEOS in the training of their employees. We provide high quality, brand independent training and are passionate about upskilling and equipping future generations with this essential knowledge, throughout the industry.”
