T-T Flow Valves Deliver Custom Solution for Industrial Application

T-T Flow Valves recently completed a challenging isolation valve order for an international client whom manufacturers around the globe had turned down due to the nature of the application.

The client, a US based Industrial Process Consultancy firm representing a French oil conglomerate opening a new site in the UK, needed a quality-engineered penstock valve and custom operating equipment for critical flow control of hot sulphur between two holding tanks.

Due to the aggressive nature of the medium, internal tank temperatures of up to 200°C and the resulting thermal stress on all surrounding equipment and materials, sourcing a willing manufacturer proved difficult for the firm.

When T-T Flow were approached for a solution, the team were happy to take on the task of designing and delivering an isolation valve that could offer reliable and leak free isolation in such a challenging environment.

Multiple virtual meetings with the international client were held to establish the needs of the site and inform T-T's choice of valve – a 150x150 penstock with a site-adjustable straight extension spindle designed to accommodate the application’s high temperatures, aggressive media and health and safety needs.

The valve’s body, fasteners, gate and operating equipment were manufactured in duplex stainless steel for its exceptional strength, corrosion resistance and ability to withstand high thermal stress.

To ensure consistent and leak-free sealing for the critical application, the penstock was designed with resilient sealing to all four sides of the aperture and self-adjusting seals on the sluice (gate) that offset the effects of thermal expansion and ensure accurate valve gate seating.

Because of the health and safety risks associated with actuation of this isolation valve, the client built an operating room above the sulphur holding tanks in which operatives can safely open and close the penstock. For this, T-T Flow Valves fabricated a custom site-adjustable extension spindle, handwheel with a protective polycarbonate tube and a floor-mounted headstock.

To protect operatives from exposure to harmful gases from the sulphur holding tanks, the pedestal was fitted with a unique rubber seal arrangement around its base to prevent leaks into the valve operating room.
