Hot Spot ISO CD 21341 Test Procedures for Liquid Hydrogen Valve for Ships

What is it?

ISO/TC 8/SC3 has submitted a new standard, ISO 21341 Test Procedures for Liquid Hydrogen Valve for Hydrogen Ships for CD consultation. ISO/TC 153 Industrial valves has a liaison with ISO/TC 8/SC3 and is invited to submit comments on the attached draft using the ISO comment template.

This new draft standard specifies general inspection and test requirements for liquid hydrogen valves to be used on board hydrogen ships and applies to gate, globe check, ball and butterfly valves containing minimum test requirements, including type testing.

If BVAA members have any comments on the new standard, please pass them on to the BVAA secretariat and we will forward them to BSI and the ISO/TC153 committee manager for consideration by ISO/TC 8/SC3. Comments should be received by BVAA by 04/10/24 to allow them to reach ISO/TC153 before the deadline.

Why is it Important?

This new standard is likely to be adopted by BVAA customers specifying valves for maritime liquid hydrogen duty in the developing liquid hydrogen transportation industry.

The design, manufacture and validation testing of valves for liquid hydrogen applications presents a significant challenge to the industrial valve industry due to the -253°C operating temperature and hazardous nature of hydrogen. This CD enquiry represents an important opportunity for BVAA members supplying products to this industry to comment on the effectiveness and validity of these proposed product testing requirements.
