Hot Spot API 6D Updated to Address Hydrogen Service

What is it?

API have published one of the first internationally recognised specifications covering specific requirements for valves operating on gaseous hydrogen service. Published as an addendum to API 6D Specification for Valves, 25th Edition, the main changes are contained in a new Annex M titled Valves in Hydrogen Gas Service.

This update introduces important new provisions that address the unique challenges associated with hydrogen gas service, underscoring the industry’s ongoing commitment to safety and innovation.

The revised specification is now available to purchase from the API store.

Why is it Important?

The new requirements in Annex M of API 6D for valves on hydrogen gas service include design validation, material specification, supplemental acceptance testing, requirements for fire-safe certification and anti-static design as well as additional non-destructive examination requirements. The requirement levels are linked to a specified Hydrogen Specification Level (HSL) intended to be stated by the end user dependent upon the required operating conditions.

This specification is important because it is the first new specification for valves in hydrogen gas service to be published in recent years. Consequently, it formalises specific requirements for valves that are likely to be adopted by much of the supply chain in the developing hydrogen supply and storage industry.

Supersedes

Addendum 2 of API 6D ed 25 specifies new requirements to API 6D 25th Edition.
