What is it?

CEN has published the latest edition of EN 16668:2025 Requirements and testing for metallic valves as pressure accessories. This harmonised standard provides general guidance on compliance to the Pressure Equipment Directive and so is an important reference standard for valve manufacturers.

It is applicable to metallic valves used as pressure accessories for industrial applications with PS > 0.5 barg and specifies requirements applicable to the design, manufacture, testing, materials and documentation.

This EN standard is now available to purchase from the usual sources.

Why is it Important?

EN 16668:2025 provides details of how to satisfy the essential safety requirements of the PED in a variety of areas and so is frequently referenced by valve manufacturers in their technical documentation. The latest revision makes changes to several clauses, including a revised Annex ZA which details the relationship between this standard and the 2014/68/EU Pressure Equipment Directive.

It is recommended that all BVAA members manufacturing products to the PED review their technical files against EN 16668:2025 to ensure that they are up to date.

Supersedes

This standard supersedes EN 16668:2016+A1:2018, however it does not yet hold the status of a harmonised standard under the PED. This will not happen until it is published in the Official Journal of the European Union. Hopefully, this will happen in the next few months.
