Hot Spot API 20U Task Group on Hot Isostatic Pressings (HIP)
What is it?
The BVAA have been advised by API that a new SC20 task group to develop a specification on Hot Isostatic Pressings (HIP) is to be formed. This powder metallurgy near net shape process is widely used for pressure containing components but there is little industry guidance for the manufacture of the material for offshore, subsea and sour service applications.
API 20U will be developed by a joint task group involving subcommittee SC20 production components and processes and SC21 the materials subcommittee. Members were asked if they were interested in participating in this work and joining the API task team to contact the BVAA, who would register their interest with API.
Why is it Important?
The work on this specification is likely to be based on ASTM A988, A989, A1080 and Norsok M-630 specifications as well as NACE MR0175, however the task group is also keen for input from valve manufacturers based on their experience with the design and qualification of HIP components. The possibility of adapting the raw powder requirements from the API 20S will also be considered by the group. Please refer to the attached slides for more detailed information.
If your organisation makes use of HIP pressure parts, participation in this task group will provide the opportunity to contribute to the development of the specification and ensure that it is effective in meeting the needs of valve manufacturers as well as end users. BVAA member participation is time and cost effective as API task groups work with a hybrid meeting format using Teams so face to face attendance at the meetings is not a necessity.
Continuous Improvement - Did we miss anything?
Hot Spots are intended to alert members and provide a brief overview of new standards, activities or procedures that are being introduced in the industry. If there is key information missing that would be helpful, please let us know so that we can improve our future service.
Please Note: This Hotspot is for information purposes, and we invite comments from BVAA members only. Please also note that at time of publication ballots may be closed. For more information, please contact the Secretariat.
BVAA Members: Did you know we have a hotspot tab on the BVAA website? Head over to www.bvaa.org.uk/login-here.asp and log into the member only area. You then need to select ‘Hotspots’ for the latest.
