AMB Co. Ltd say thank you and farewell to a half-centurion!

Steve Gregory
Albert Marsh and Bestelilte Hardfacing Company Ltd are a family-run high-precision engineering business; the hardfacing specialists have been a mainstay of the world-renowned Sheffield industrial skyline since 1938.
Just before Christmas last year, Steve Gregory, a long-serving member of the AMB team, decided to take retirement, after an incredible 50 years of employment with the company.
Albert Marsh’s great grandson, and current Managing Director, Jack Austin summarises an inspiring feat.
“Steve Gregory epitomises everything good about AMB Co. Ltd; punctual, conscientious, hardworking, meticulous, driven, wants the best for the company, will do anything to help a colleague, and just an all-round decent human being.
Steve started with us as a manual miller back in 1974 at the tender age of 16 in his old army jacket, which I’m told was synonymous with the first half of his time with us!
When I first started on the machines at 16, Steve took me under his wing, he’s someone I look up to; everyone does really, he has the respect of everyone within the company, regardless of position. Following well over 30 years as a highly skilled machinist, his transition to Inspection team leader was seamless, as expected.
It was the end of an era when Steve hung up his overalls for the final time at the end of last year. However, in celebration of a career spanning 50-years with AMB Co. Ltd, a truly remarkable achievement, Steve has been instrumental in shaping our success, his dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to excellence has been an inspiration to us all, and I firmly believe that this will be Steve’s legacy; the lasting mark he’s left on our organisation, and even the wider UK engineering community.
What makes it even more remarkable is that Steve doesn’t drive. In his 50 years with AMB Co. Ltd, he has relied on buses, trams, and his own trusty two feet to get to and from work! The only time he was ever late was when he walked to work in the snow, and was promptly turned round and sent home as the weather was so bad.
His love of photography and DIY have sparked many conversations over the years, and unfortunately for us, I’m sure both of those hobbies will keep him busy enough not to miss AMB Co. Ltd too much!
Steve, on behalf of everyone at AMB Co. Ltd, we thank you for your dedication and service. All the best!”
